Yufuin no Mori Train, Dazaifu, 8 hours, rated 4.7 across 54 traveller reviews.

Overview

This day tour packs four very different Kyushu experiences into roughly eight hours, starting from a meeting point at the Oriental Hotel Fukuoka Hakata Station. There is no hotel pickup, so travellers make their own way to Hakata for an early departure by private vehicle heading south to Yufuin.

The first stop is Yufuin itself, a hot spring town framed by Mount Yufu, lakes and forest. Time here goes to wandering Yunotsubo Street for snacks and souvenirs and seeing Lake Kinrin, where morning mist often settles over the water. From there the group boards the Yufuin no Mori sightseeing train, known for its warm wooden interior and wide panoramic windows, for a one-way ride through fields, streams and villages.

The afternoon continues to Beppu for Umi Jigoku, the largest of the city's famous hell ponds, where the water glows cobalt blue in sunlight. The final cultural stop is Dazaifu Tenmangu, a shrine with over a thousand years of history, reached through a large torii gate and an old approach street, before the return journey to Fukuoka. A guide leads the whole day, and reviewers frequently praise the organisation and the mix of scenery, trains and shrine culture. It suits anyone who wants a full day outside the city without arranging transport themselves.

What To Expect From The Tour

A few practical points will help travellers get the most from this long day.

Common issues. Some travellers mention the schedule would work better with more time at key stops, and one reviewer wished for less time in Yufuin and more at the temple. The train substitution also matters: from August 1 to September 30 the Yufuin no Mori is under maintenance and is replaced by the red Limited Express Yufu, with a fare refund only if the train is suspended outright. From December 28 to January 5, Dazaifu Tenmangu is swapped for Nyoirinji Temple because of New Year events and traffic. During the August 8 to 16, 2026 peak holiday, traffic jams are frequent and the operator warns against booking dinners, flights or Shinkansen connections on the tour day.
